Would Diabetes Coaching Help Me With My Diabetes?

Are you “sick and tired “of being “sick and tired”?

There is so much you can do to switch that around! There is something you can do to change that feeling of being sick and tired! Have you ever considered Diabetes coaching?

In blog article from 2/2019, “Would Coaching Help me?

Coaching is defined as:

Diabetes coaching/consulting will help you deepen your learning of yourself and your diabetes and forward the action towards your goals.

Coaching is usually short term to assist you in getting on the right path. Most clients use coaching for 6-12 months, every 2 weeks. Some people choose to do Maintenance coaching less often to keep them on track.

Diabetes coaching can be done on the phone or via skype or facetime.

Below is a sample coaching conversation.

Sample dialogue:

Coach: What do you want?

Client: I want to get off this roller coaster and reduce my low and high blood sugars.

Coach: How are you feeling being on this roller coaster?

Client: I feel hopeless and out of control.

Coach: I hear you are feeling hopeless and out of control. How would you like to feel?

Client: I want to feel physically good, have hope for a better future and mange my diabetes so I feel like I am in control rather than diabetes in control.

Coach: What do you think you need to be in more control of diabetes?

Client: Well, I know I need to start exercising.

Coach: What will exercise do for you?

Client: It will help me lower my sugars. I think I do a good job eating but for some reason I don’t exercise!

Coach: What about the low sugars? What do you think you need to do?

Client: I need to start being on a more regular schedule. I skip meals often.

Coach: ok, that sounds like you know what it is keeping you on the roller coaster.

Client: Yes, I need to set up a plan.

Coach: Can I help you with that?

Client: Yes, please do!

Coach: Before we begin, what is the main reason you want to get off the roller coaster?

Client: I want to have more energy for my family. I also feel like I am at risk for problems with Diabetes. I want to be there for my family.

Coach: Great! Let’s get to that plan so you can get off this roller coaster.

…….and the coaching continues.

Some people come to coaching not knowing what they want. That is ok.

Coaching meets you where you are at, and the coach helps you figure out what it is you want.

A coach can assist you to be accountable. How many times have said, “I know what I need to do…I just need to do it.” This is one of the reasons why a person comes to coaching.

Coaching helps you identify goals and obstacles and assists with accountability. Often the coach will ask a question for deepening learning such as, “what is it that gets in your way?”

The coach assists you in figuring out what gets in your way and often will assist you in setting a goal and may even give an assignment. An assignment might be, ok, you told me walking would be a start for you, will you walk 10 minutes 5 days/week.  Will you do that?  Choices are yes, no or counter-offer. The counter- offer may be “I will start walking 10 minutes 4 days/week.”

See if you are ready to start coaching?

Below are a few questions from the Coaching readiness form.

·      I want to live fully and not just survive or get by.

·      There is a big gap between where I am now and where I want to be.

·      I am ready for change.

·      I am willing and able to do the work required.

·      I am willing to try out new things even though I am not sure they will work.

These are a few questions to ask yourself to see if you are ready to make positive changes in your life.
